A Reflection on The World Mental Health Day: Nigeria, Somnambulism and Mass Psychosis

Good to have you here again guys. Straight to the point, no joke today😁. As an intern in a hospital, my first experience with World Mental Health Day celebration was nothing short of eye-opening. Surrounded by passionate professionals dedicated to raising awareness about mental health, I felt an immediate connection to the intricacies of the brain and its profound impact on our well-being. The history of World Mental Health Day, celebrated annually on October 10th since 1992, emphasizes the importance of mental health education, advocacy, and support across the globe. This year, the theme “Mental Health at Work” underscores the critical need for workers and workplaces to prioritize mental well-being, recognizing that our work environments significantly influence our mental health.

Linking this theme to Nigeria’s current reality reveals a troubling disconnect. The concept of somnambulism, or sleepwalking, serves as a striking metaphor for our government’s approach to policy-making. In neuroscience, it describes a state where individuals act without awareness of their actions. This resonates with the government’s body language and decision-making, which often appears disconnected from the harsh realities faced by citizens. As sudden fuel price hikes lead to skyrocketing inflation, the governing body seems to navigate the landscape as if in a daze, oblivious to the consequences of their choices. The abrupt removal of fuel subsidies and the concomitant floating of the Naira have plunged many into financial turmoil, making everyday survival a daunting challenge. Meanwhile, the government’s propaganda feels akin to gaslighting; it plays on the intelligence of the populace while the reality remains stark and distressing.

This environment has given rise to what I term mass psychosis; a phenomenon where a group of people shares a delusion or collective irrationality. In Nigeria, the constant barrage of economic hardships, combined with misinformation and policy mismanagement, leaves many in a state of collective confusion and despair. The psychological toll is immense, leading to heightened anxiety and a pervasive sense of hopelessness.

To address these challenges,  I think it is essential for the government of the day to reassess non-functioning policies. The approach of handing out rice as a catch-all solution for economic and environmental issues is both simplistic and ineffective. We must avoid turning Nigeria into a "Rice Republic," where leaders like Declan Rice might come to govern us, hahaha. If you are wondering who Declan Rice is, pls ask any Arsenal fan hahaha 😄😅.

As we navigate these turbulent waters, it is vital for individuals to prioritize their mental health. Embrace self-care, reduce unnecessary stress, and find solace in God. Turn to comforting words in the Bible and allow faith to provide hope. Remember to pray for our leaders but let’s keep our humor intact and refrain from calling anyone “T-Pain,” as the irony might just bring more pain to our collective plight when he returns by flight. But who is T-pain? 😅😅

Moreover, here are some practical ways to enhance your mental well-being: engage in regular physical activity, connect with supportive friends and family, practice mindfulness or meditation, pray, and seek professional help if needed.

Till next time I see you, bye!!!!!💖💖💖
